What is an AHEC?

Area Health Education Centers were created by Congress in 1971 to connect the resources of university health science centers with local planning, educational and clinical resources.

How are AHECs funded?

The federal government awards grants in order to establish AHEC programs across the country.

What makes up an AHEC?

AHECs are run by a school of medicine within a state. The school of medicine acts as the program office and contracts remote centers in rural areas. Each center is governed by a board of directors.

How many AHECs operate in West Virginia?

There are five centers in our state. The Southern West Virginia AHEC covers the counties of Boone, Logan, McDowell, Mingo and Wyoming.
